Cigar Review – Nestor Miranda 1989

09/02/2010

1989 Rosado

Nestor Miranda is responsible for some very good cigars, and the 1989 was released to continue the trend; it also fits into the budget cigar category, weighing in at just under five bucks a stick (that’s $80.00 per box of twenty!) The name 1989 refers to the year that the Miami Cigar Company was founded. Additionally, it’s being produced by Jamie & Don Pepin Garcia through the My Father Cigar Company, responsible this year for the wonderful La Reloba, as well as the less-successful Jamie Garcia Especial. It comes in both a rosado and a oscuro format, the rosado being closer to medium and the oscuro packing a bit more punch. Today, I’m lighting up the robusto (5×50) size of the rosado wrapper.

Cigar Review – San Cristobal

08/29/2010

San Cristobal Papagayo

The San Cristobal is a fairly old blend produced by Ashton, however with the recent upswing of large gauge cigars, the Papagayo size was released (5.7×55) in order to cater to that rising market. As a fan of bigger ring gauges, I was happy to hear about it, and at a recent Ashton event at my local place (well, not so recent; this was a few months ago.) The wrapper is incredibly oily and scaly, and looks totally gorgeous. The smell is a bit bitter with the usual barnyard scent.

Cigar Review – Hammer and Sickle

08/26/2010

Hammer and Sickle

Hammer and Sickle is a cigar that is being produced by a vodka company of the same name. It’s boxed in a beautiful glass case, and was featured at the IRCPR show this year in a display that included a piece of the Berlin Wall. There is not much information around about these, but there has been a generally positive reaction, and at the suggestion of a few people on twitter (namely @Spencer_I) I decided I’d review one that came my way courtesy of the guys over at Toasted Foot. It’s a nice looking cigar baring the Hammer and Sickle mark on it’s band. The wrapper is a light, reddish color and looks fantastically packed.

Cigar Review – La Flor Dominicana Coronado

08/25/2010

La Flor Dominicana Coronado

Tonight I decided to smoke a La Flor Dominicana Coronado in a Corona Gorda size, 7×60.  This cigar hails from the Dominican Republic.  The wrapper is a beautiful, caramel colored Nicaraguan Sun Grown.  The filler is Dominican Sumatra and Piloto Cubano and the binder is Dominican Corojo. Upon initial inspection, the wrapper has an oily appearance with several prominent veins and nice double cap.  The cigar has noticeable heft in the hand, with no soft spots to be found.  A smell of the foot reveals a definitive hay aroma.  I cut the cap with a double guillotine and light it with a torch.  The draw is great and slightly sweet.

Cigar Review – HC Series Habano Colorado

08/21/2010

HC Series Habano Colorado

Many know Xikar as a maker of quality cutters, lighters, knifes, and as of 2009, the HC Series of cigars. What some may not realize is that the HC Series Habano Colorado has existed since 2007, under the name Defiance. As the Defiance, it received a 91 from CA, and last year received a 92 from the same publication. I’ve been meaning to get my hands on some, but I’ve actually had trouble locating them around me. Finally, I managed to score one off of Matt at Toasted Foot, and another off a friend from my local place, so I decided to torch them and give it a go! The Habano Colorado is a dark, reddish color, and the wrapper feels soft and a bit oily in the hand. The construction is marveouls, and there are no blemishes or soft spots to be found. I did find the prelight draw to be a tad stiffer then I’d liked, but once I lit it up, it smoked perfectly.
