Cigar Review – Camacho Triple Maduro

Camacho Triple Maduro

The triple maduro holds a special place in my heart as my first ‘favorite cigar’ aside from Romeo y Julieta which was my favorite when I didn’t smoke cigars often. It was the first box of cigars I bought, and I actually remember the day very well: it was a Camacho event, and I didn’t know enough about cigars to even look for a rep, but I bought my first big humidor and my first box of Camacho Triple Maduro torpedos. I made this purchase after smoking a single robusto, and today I decided I’d break out a triple maduro from that box, with three years of age on it.

The Triple Maduro is a really gorgeous cigar; the dark, DARK wrapper with few veins and a lot of tooth is set off perfectly by the shiny silver double-bands. The term triple maduro denotes it’s status as the sole cigar (that I’m aware of) that has wrapper, binder, and filler that are all maduro tobacco. This happened when one of Christian’s friends asked him if it would be possible; the result is this magnificent cigar. The wrapper smells faintly of chocolate, fruit, and cedar, and the prelight draw allows for a very similar description. By the way, figured I should mention that this is a figurado vitola but comes in heavy at 6X54. It’s also a very hefty cigar, and carries a similarly heavy price tag at $13.05. That said, the aging and fermenting that needs to be done is what really drives up the price; lots of extra labor.

Nice even burn, even with the strong wind!

I lit up with a little difficulty, as it had begun gusting just as I began. I puffed away on this beautiful cigar as I chatted with my good friend Matt about some psychological principles, movies, and the abstract nature of the human mind. Every time I smoke a cigar, I still find myself marveling at how well a good cigar can supplement conversation. The triple maduro starts off with some powerful notes of deep, rich chocolate, sweet cedar, and cream. This is a powerful cigar, despite the sweet flavors, but if you like the maduro taste, this is the cigar for you! The construction is impeccable, and the burn as nice and sharp.

The burn moves on! Notice how sharp it is!

By the second third, the ash hadn’t dropped yet! The biggest flavors are a nice, sweet cedar and an almost spicy, savory flavor, like a steak grilled on a plank of wood. There is a great, burn vanilla and chocolate finish that is so intense at points that it feels like you’re just chowing down on a chocolate bar! The burn is still perfect, and as you can see by the picture, what a burn it is. I also really like how creamy and plentiful the smoke is. This is a dark cigar, in that you really feel it in your mouth and in your gut, but if you full bodied cigars, and maduros in general, this is your cup of tea. Tea of Doom!

This ash is just out of control. Mark of wonderful construction.

The final third is a nice core of smoky wood, oak, and that burn sugar cane flavor that I love out of maduros. Some black pepper emerges to balance out the sweet, and this cigar settles down nicely to a fantastic finish. The ash didn’t break at all, so I just stood this cigar up as a monument to all that is tobacco!

Oh my god! It's taking over!

The Monument of Burn

Final Judgment: A classic cigar that you should try at least once if you like the maduro flavor profile, or if you like strong cigars. Sweet enough to give you some sort of disease, and flavorful enough to appease an Iron Chef, this is the sort of cigar you want to have to celebrate a good time!

  3. The only other all-maduro on the market is the CAO MX3, available in only 2 locations: W. Curtis Draper in Washington, D.C., and Burns Tobacconist in Chattanooga, TN. At Burns, it’s also referred to as the “423″ which is the area code for this part of the state. I reviewed it here:

  4. True, I thought about including that since I’d heard of it, but I didn’t know it was still in production!

  5. Fascinating…and I agree pretty much with everything. Keep up the great work…I will undoubtedly be back soon Bob Perry, Work New York, 65 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007
